April Meeting Update

Welcome to our new guests: Susan from Wisconsin, new to Riyadh but a seasoned quilter and Linda who has recently returned to the Kingdom for her fourth time! We look forward to sharing with you and also benefiting from your expertise!

We started off the meeting with a visit to our library - an extensive collection of quilting books some of which are shown here. Next came our fabric swap. The theme this month was "fabrics that could be used in a desert landscape". Participators enriched their stashes with interesting fat quarters.

It's time to put together this years Block of the Month designed by our President, Marcella. Each member who succeeds in putting their top together before next month's meeting will get a prize so get sewing! Marcella made two alterations while putting the top together: in the butterfly block you must cut off the corner of one of the sky background squares and replace it with a piece of brown material (making a half-square triangle) that will blend better with the tree; you must also cut off about 1" from the flower block so that the whole block moves over (check with Marcella!!!)

Always take the time to label your quilts.

Our program tonight was a sneak peak of Judy's future workshop on stained-glass quilts.

Judy showed us many different ways of making single and double-fold bias tape for stained-glass quilts. The most convenient was the ready-made, 1/4" fusable bias tape from Dritz but she also showed us how to make our own using several techniques and products. Here is a link to her program notes for future reference.

Example of Judy's work.

Aren't those fabrics perfect?

Judy will conduct a stained-glass workshop at our usual location on May 7th, from 10 am - 1 pm. A lovely rose wall hanging (approximately 18" X 24") is the project. Space is limited so e-mail Judy to get all the details and reserve a place.

Show and Tell was inspiring as usual. Here are a few pics:

Evelyn you are getting to be a real expert at the lone star quilt!

Doesn't this quilt make you think of a glass of iced, pink lemonade on a hot summer's day?

"Diamonds are forever"! by Eva.

One of the "mystery quilts" made at friendship group.

The first of fourteen wedding quilts that Marie plans to make for each of her grandchildren. God bless you , Marie!

Each block was machine-quilted using the embroidery module.

Marie explaining her technique of how she quilted in sections and then put the whole quilt together (a modification of the quilt-as-you-go technique). I have got to try that!

Gladys has finished her Double Wedding Ring quilt which is absolutely gorgeous. Check out the custom, machine-quilting!

The quilt is scrappy but the use of blues in the corners ties it all together - just stunning!

This week don't forget Eva's bag workshop on Thursday morning, April 23rd at our usual location. It will be a three hour class starting at 9:30am. If interested, please contact Eva by e-mail or phone to reserve a place.

Marie is also giving a very informative class on how to use your Bernina Embroidery module. It will take place at Marie's compound on May 5th and 12th at 9:30am. Please contact Marie to reserve your place.

Finally, it's that time of year again - Election Time! Our president read out a list of nominated members for the positions. In all cases, only one or two persons volunteered or was nominated for each position. So we voted in the following:

President: Evelyn
1st Vice President: Judy
2nd Vice President: Linda W.
Secretary: Yvonne
Treasurer: Marie
Challenge Quilt: Evelyn
Fabric Swap: Krystal
Frienship Groups: Elke
Library: Jean and Holly
Blog: Nour and Siti

The positions of Parlementarian and Block of the Month are still vacant so if you would like to contribute your time and effort please get in touch with Marcella.

Until next time - happy quilting!

March Meeting Update

Looks like I missed a great meeting that was held in March. We had the results of our Challenge Quilt contest which was judged by Nora Shafi, a talented quilt artist and entrepreneur from Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Nora's quilts have won awards at the Dubai International Quilt Festival 2008. Check out two of her quilts that won 2nd and 3rd place here.

Many thanks goes to Cherene for organizing the quilt challenge. The theme this year was "Stars" and we we uncovered quite a few during this competition:

First place winner, Starburst by Marcella.

Second place winner, Reach for the Stars by Evelyn.

Third place winner, Virginia Stars by Marie.

The Guiding Light by Mary.

Becoming a Man by Yvonne.

Stars in my Quilt by Gladys.

Memories of a Special Winter by Elke.

Oh Holy Man by Cherene.

City Under Stars by Jessica.

Congratulations to all our winners and to all our members who participated in this challenge! A special 'thank you' to Nora for coming all the way from Jubail to judge our little competition. For those of you who helped organise this function also big thanks! Our Executive Committee would like to say farewell, from left to right, Evelyn, Judy, Marcella, Marie and Yvonne.

February Meeting Update

Hello again to all riyadh quilters and to anyone who may venture upon this blog. I just got back from the USA about one week ago. I had a great time with the kids and the rest of the family etc. I visited my local quilt shop just to see what was new and (of course) I couldn't leave without purchasing some fat quarters this time a collection of black and whites.

Just thought I would update you with some pics from February's meeting:

This is the finished product from Marci's workshop that took place on March 19th. It's called "Simple as Pie" and it makes a lovely Xmas tree skirt.

Beautiful color combinations from Mary. The different blues really sparkle and give this quilt such depth.

These are the results of an informal class led by 'moi' where we made some cute covers for our sewing machines- I had some very good students and we had a lot of fun. The original pattern calls for a kitty getting tangled in spools of thread but Evelyn (after making her kitty) did some improvisation of her own - way to go, Eve! The covers were very useful during last month's dust storm that I escaped!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but this was another quilt top made by Mary (I think I've stayed away too long!!!)

And finally here is our BOM to guide you all in your fabric placement and sewing.

Until I see you at the next meeting, 'take care and happy quilting'!!!

January Meeting Update

Our January program on the Electric quilt was presented by Marie. She explained how 'with a click of a mouse' you can virtually design your own quilt tops.

This time-saving technology lets you instantly choose quilt blocks, audition colors, settings, sashings etc. giving you a preview of your finished quilt. Even your own fabric choices can be downloaded and viewed - all without sewing a stitch!

This computer program is loaded with tutorial-type videos and many more extras. For those of you who may have missed this program you can learn more at www.electricquilt.com

Our fabric swap gave us the opportunity to view some finished quilts that have utilized the swapped fabric. Here is our line-up of beauties!

Our fantastic Block of the Month is in full force.

The next two blocks are here to guide you. Here is the heart block.

And here is the tree trunk block.

To keep track of your steps (and hopefully eliminate errors - oh no! I've cut the wrong fabric!) Evelyn suggests laying out all your fabric pieces and labeling them before you start sewing.

A little Show and Tell to inspire you. It's not to early to start on those Xmas presents for next year (or to finish up those already started from last year!)

Until next month... I leave you with some English paper-pieced eye-candy from Marie.

Welcome back everyone!

Welcome back to all our members who went home to enjoy the holidays with family and friends! We are looking forward to seeing you at the January meeting that promises another not to miss program by Marie! More great news! - Marie will be giving a separate workshop on January 29th on Machine Applique. If you are interested, see Marie at the meeting to register. The fee for the workshop will be 50 SR and must be paid for at the January 18th meeting.

Don't forget your fabric swap. This month we are doing something a little different - bring a fat quarter of your favorite fabric and the quilt that you used it in (if you still have it)! Not only will we swap but we'll get inspired too!!!

Have you all done your December BOM's? If you bring your finished block back every month your name will go into a drawing for a prize. I have seen some prizes and they are NICE. So get sewing - you still have a few days left - and if anyone is interested, we have pre-packaged BOM's for sale @ 150 SR (see Evelyn).

Last but not least, any snack additions to our refreshment table will be greatly appreciated! See you all at the meeting!

Hopeful in 2009...

May 2009 be a wonderful year filled with Peace, Love Prosperity and an end to all fighting and wars. Keep on quilting!

December Meeting

Happy holidays everyone! A holiday dinner is being planned for December 21st at our regular meeting place. Spouses and friends are welcome. The cost for the meal will be 80 SR all inclusive. Reservations must be made in advance. Payment is made at the dinner.

Quilt-themed gifts (50 SR limit) will be exchanged. Bring one and choose one from Santa's goody bag!

Get the pattern for this cute holiday-themed wall hanging here.

Have you all been good for Santa? See you at the dinner!

November Meeting

Greetings to all our members and to all who venture across this blog! Last meeting we had a very successful gathering. Our fearless leader, Marcie , gave us a demo on scalloped borders and continuous bias binding. Scalloped borders add such interesting detail to a quilt and with all their wavy borders they must be bound with binding that has been cut on the bias. Thank you Marcie for all your efforts - you continue to inspire us!

We have another gorgeous Block of the Month project this year designed by Marcie. Personally, I think the green batiks make the leaves of the tree come alive! There is some applique involved but don't be scared - the results will be stunning!

We had our usual fabric swap organized by Eva. Keeping with a seasonal theme, we exchanged reds/greens, holly, poinsettias, golds etc. For those of you who are new to quilting, the swap is a great way to build up some variation in your stash.

Some Show and Tell from one of our members. I think that this is a Xmas present for a lucky someone - no peeking!

Closeup of the detail. Is the lucky someone a nurse by any chance? Enjoy!

Headed for the Dubai Quilt Show????

Beautiful holiday table toppers by Evelyn.

Sushi anyone? Thank you Anna, you really spoil us!!

More delightful snacks!

A reminder to you all - if you present a program you get a fat-quarter pack of lovely co-ordinated fabrics! See you at the next meeting!

* The most important rule of all…HAVE FUN! Step out of your quilting comfort zone and experiment a little. GOOD LUCK LADIES!

Hi Ladies.

It's your friendly, neighborhood challenge quilt coordinator. Please find attached a preview of next year's challenge quilt theme and rules. It's an easy one because of the endless possibilities. It's a hard one because of the endless possibilities. Do you hate me yet?

As many of you leave the Kingdom for countries abundant with quilt shops and fabric stores, I thought you might like to get a head start on your planning and fabric hoarding for your project. Your husband won't mind...I promise!!

Please check the above e-mail addresses for members or friends that may be missing or e-mail addresses are wrong. I don't want to miss anyone as I am expecting a quilt from each and every one of you (on a voluntary/have to sort of basis).

I wish you all a safe, happy and relaxing summer. See you in September.

Cheers,

Cherene

Fabric Swap Schedule 2008/09

1) September – The sky so bright
Do you have fabric that could represent the sky? Stars, sun rays, clouds or even the moon. The colours could be endless! Blues, gold, reds, browns, midnight blue. Bring your daylight fat quarter and you may bring home a night time fat quarter instead!

2) October - Ugly fabric
Have you ever looked at your stash and wondered that perhaps a certain fabric was bought at a moment of temporary insanity? Why don't you bring a fat quarter along, perhaps someone else will like it? The person voted with the ugliest fabric gets to bring home two fat quarters.

3) November - Christmas
Poinsettas, Ivy, reds, golds, stocking whatever reminds you of Christmas. Perhaps you can use it to make a Christmas quilt for next month.

4) December - No meeting

5) January – Favorite fabric
Can you spare a fat quarter of your favorite fabric? Perhaps you used it so often that someone else may make good use of your favorite fabric? Bring the quilt you sew with that fabric (if you can) for Show and tell to inspire and you'll be amazed how that fabric would look in someone else's quilt.

6) February - Animals
Be it butterflies, cats, fishes or birds. Bring a long a fat quarter and see what else you bring home in return.

7) March - Stars
Do you have any star fabric leftover from the Quilt Challenge? Bring along a fat quarter and swap it along for a greater variety in your stash.

8) April - Desert landscape
Beige, gold, browns, yellow ocher, reds. Bring a fat quarter of the fabric you think can be used in a desert landscape quilt.

9) May - Orphan block(s)
Perhaps you put together a block that you didn't like? Or you miscalculated and had one extra. Bring it along and swap it with someone else. You'd be surprise what could be made from them.

Oppurtunity Quilt winner 2007/08

Congratulations to our winner Charlotte Doepner from Finland. Her winning ticket number was 115.

In total we managed to collect SR4,600 for King Abdulaziz Medical City Family Safety Program for Battered and Abused Women and Children.

We would like to thank everyone for their participation and we look forward to your continued support next year.

A special thank you to Kathy Knight for drawing the ticket.

April Meeting

We started this month's meeting with a touch sombre mood with a prayer for Judy Aitken who passed on last Friday morning, 18th April 2008. Judi was the President of the Guild in 2004 and was the quilt teacher for many of the quilters in the guild.

May her soul rest in peace as she is well loved by many and her loss is felt all round.

The winners for this months door prizes are Eva, Jean and Eileen. Perhaps Cherene had passed her ongoing luck to Eva?

In total, we collected SR4,600 for the King Abdulaziz Medical City Family Safety Program for Battered and Abused Women and Children. Well done ladies!

For the Block-Of-the-Month, we will need to provide our own brown fabric for the pole and the stand of the birdhouse. Evelyn will send us the instructions for piecing the quilt top as well as a picture of the finished quilt via email to those participating. Ladies who bring in a pieced quilt top will receive the pattern for the pine trees.

Evelyn thanked everyone for their participation in the challenge quilt competition. Please be reminded to bring your quilt entries as well as any other quilts you want to showcase next month, where we will have a buffet dinner and mini exhibition at the restaurant.

For next month, the last meeting of the year, we will meet on the 27th of May at the restaurant. The meeting will be short and sweet with a silent vote for the 2008-2009 Guild Board Members election. We will be enjoying a buffet at SR55 per person.

Members are encouraged to bring their family and friends to the dinner. This will be an opportunity for them to view some of our quilts and for the families to mingle.

Eva has kindly agreed to organize the dinner and quilt exhibition for the Guild. She has set the 20th May as the closing date for the submissions of names for both the dinner and the gate. The guild will be waiving the guest fees if you choose to bring guests next month.

Please hand in your quilts for the exhibition to Eva preferably 2 days prior to the dinner.

The Guild will be inviting and sponsoring the buffet dinner as a gratitude to Richard May, compound manager who has kindly given us a wonderful location to meet, Kathy Knight and Najela Mohammed, judges for our challenge quilt competition.

For our program this month, Cherene showed us fusible grid piecing
